The syrinx is more commonly known in RealLife as panpipes. Their name comes from the Greek myth as to their origin. According to the legend, Syrinx was a nymph whom Pan became infatuated with. When he chased her, she turned into a reed in order to escape. Pan reached the reed, he picked it and kissed it. Upon kissing the reed, he found he could play music upon it. He later expanded the instrument, and thus his trademark pipes were born.

Panpipes/syrinxes have been used worldwide since before history. Currently, they are most popular in South America. Syrinxes can be of almost any size, the Peruvian panpipe usually is made of 24 inch tubes.

For many years, there was only one syrinx in Elanthia. The "carved raven-bone syrinx bound with deep blue leather thongs" was sold first at the second Shard fest, in Nytingale's wagon. I am told that it was also later sold at the Feast of Eluned. I do not know if it will be around again, but given the standard for recycling current items, it appears likely.
The festival syrinx had the following Look Description -- Each of the hollow bones is carved with tiny skeletal figures capering over the surface as they play the instruments they carry in hand. Soft blue leather thongs decorated with turquoise beads wrap around each bone to hold the instrument together.
