Roses the Color of the Night
by Dewsong de Rosa

I'm going to cheat here, and just put up a rendition of this song as I performed it at the Valentine's Day, 2004 "A Night of Romance" concert, straight from Mykk's notes. All of us bards owe a great debt to Mykk for his fine work on his concert archive.

Dewsong says, "right then... to go along with my newest song... one of my oldest... "

Dewsong says, "cause I know Daer and Mykk and a couple others would nag and right if I didn't sing one of them"

Dewsong grins at Daerlynn.
Dewsong grins at Mykk.
Dewsong says, "riot that is"
Mykk says, "Almost assuredly."
Dewsong chuckles.
Mykk chuckles.
Daerlynn smiles at Dewsong.
Daerlynn says, "We'd be right, too."
Daerlynn nods to Dewsong.

Dewsong says, "somehow, and I have no clue as to this, this next song seems to have become a bit of a classic of mine... "

Dewsong says, "one of the first songs I ever sang before a large public in this province... "

Dewsong says, "Roses the Color of the Night"

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"What is this thing called love?

The man at the bar says it's a gamble,
that it's a game you always lose,
that if you're going to play,
then you'd best get used to drinking alone."

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"The woman across the way knows it's a line,
that men drop "I love you"'s like bait
whenever they feel like getting some."

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

    "The children can't define it,
        maybe they know best.

     Maybe."

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"Maybe love is just a lie,
        and lust the only fact."

Dewsong gazes off into the distance.
Dewsong shakes his head.

Dewsong emphatically sings in a tenor voice:

"No, I could never believe that.
I have felt the power of love
and lust is a whimpering thing next to that."

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"I've learned that love is a weeping rose.
It only cries in the rain,
          where it's safe."

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"I always knew that roses are red,
but now I know that they're also pink and white.

I've even seen roses the color of the night."

Dewsong smiles.

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"I want to love her like a dream,
But I want it to be real,
Real for her, real for me,

Real for all the poets lined along the wall,"

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"Real for the man at the bar,
toasting us with his glass of pain,
letting hope enter his heart again,"

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"Real for the woman across the way
        unclenching her unlighted cigar
        As she begins to see
there's more to love than lust,"

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

    "There's even more than a
A rose the color of the night
crying in the saftey of the rain,"

Dewsong sings in a tenor voice:

"And real for all the children,
especially the ones we used to be..."

Dewsong smiles.
Mykk says, "We used to be."
Dewsong bows.
